The forarduino user quickly finds that the number of pins available to connect to external devices the user wishes to control is limited. A 12- or 16-key keypad uses 7 or 8 lines (although these same lines can sometimes be shared—Keypad library, liquid crystal display). Using keypads connected to the inter-ic (IIC or I2C) bus, only two forarduino pins and ground and the I2C bus can have many additional devices also simultaneously connected to the same two lines.

The Keypad_Dyrobot library extends the Keypad library so that a keypad requiring 8 lines or fewer connected to a Microchip  I2C parallel-port behaves very nearly the same as one directly-connected to the precious forarduino pins. Moreover, two or more such connections can operate simultaneously to permit applications needing more than 16 keys.
